National Grid submits Snowdonia tunnel proposal

Great Britain – National Grid has proposed to move 3.5km of overhead power lines underground. If approved, a 4.4m-diameter, 3km-long tunnel will be dug in the area of the Dwyryd Estuary in Snowdonia, allowing for the removal of 10 pylons and significantly improving the aesthetic of the landscape.

National Grid awards LPT2 tunnels contract

Great Britain – National Grid has signed a GBP 400M contract with Hochtief-Murphy JV to deliver the tunnels and shafts for the London Power Tunnels (LPT2) project. The overall scheme will cost GBP 1bn (USD 1.3bn) and take six years to complete. This is the second phase of the LPT project.

Great Britain - J. Murphy & Sons Limited has appointed John Murphy as its new CEO. Murphy was the company’s current chief operating officer as Tunnels and Tunnelling went to print, responsible for leading the group’s operations in the UK and abroad. CEO Steve Hollingshead will step down at the end of the year (December 2017) and take up a role as non-executive director on the company’s board.

First trains through delft

The construction of a four-track railway tunnel in Delft in the Netherlands has reached an important milestone. From March 2015, trains have been running on two tracks through the tunnel and station.
